Here’s why beloved ‘Modern Family’ star has been living with a pacemaker since age 29

If you think that only older folks have to get pacemakers, think again.

Julie Bowen, whose best known for playing Claire Dunphy in the ABC sitcom “Modern Family,” recently revealed something that fans were not aware of.

While appearing on an episode of “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum” podcast, Bowen was asked if she ever had to have a surgery.

“I do have a pacemaker… I forget about it all the time,” she admitted.

Bowen then explained that she was diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, the condition could give you a heartbeat that’s too slow, too fast, or a combination of both.

Rosenbaum told Bowen that he has a “low resting heart rate,” and Bowen noted that she used to as well. But since she got the pacemaker, her heart rate is set so it doesn’t fall below 45 beats per minute.

“When did they know this? Was this at birth?” Rosenbaum had asked.

Bowen explained to the show host that she “was a runner all throughout high school,” but she had “always had a low heartrate”

It wasn’t until the actress noticed something strange while on vacation with her sister, who was then a medical student. Her sister was the one who discovered an irregularity and advised her to see a cardiologist.

After filming a pilot for a show, Bowen took the advice. Before she knew it, a procedure was scheduled for her to receive the pacemaker.

And this all happened when the actress was just 29-years-old.

She admitted the shock got to her, thinking a pacemaker at 29 meant her life was over.

“Whenever I was relaxed, really relaxed, it would be like watching TV or movie or something, it was like I’d been holding my breath for a while, that feeling of lightheadedness, and they said, ‘You’re going to be driving a car and you’re going to kill somebody,’” she recalled.

That’s when Bowen made the imperative decision, by responding, “Give me the (expletive) pacemaker.”
