“Who could have imagined this is where Willow would wind up,” muses General Hospital’s Katelyn MacMullen. During our recent chat, the actress — who celebrates her eighth anniversary with the show on Saturday, October 18 — summed things up beautifully with four simple words: “She’s been through it!”
Viewers will recall that when first they met Willow, she was a kindly school teacher whose dark and twisted past would only slowly be revealed. “I totally remember my first day,” she smiles. “I got to work with Becky [Herbst, Liz] and Roger Howarth [ex-Franco], and I was so nervous! But at the end of the day, I thought, ‘Great, I survived.’”

Ever since, MacMullen and Willow have been on a journey together. “Personally, I’ve learned so much about my process and even why I am drawn to this work in the first place. As for Willow… ” she trails off for a moment before admitting with a sigh, “She’s definitely a little lost these days.”
This makes sense, she elaborates, given that art reflects life. “Willow started in one place and has now gone in completely the opposite direction,” MacMullen reflects. “And in life, you do the same thing. You have ups and downs, and along the way you figure things out about yourself. Where Willow’s concerned, she still has a lot to learn. I don’t think she’s truly figured out who she is or maybe even how she fits into this crazy life she’s living.”
“Crazy” is something of an understatement, given that Willow has found herself caught in a vicious battle between Michael and Drew, two of the most powerful men in Port Charles. “One of her biggest challenges is knowing who to trust. Every time she thinks she’s putting her faith into someone worthy, they disappoint her. Michael, Drew, Nina… it’s a pretty long list!”
Of course, Willow is currently facing the fight of her life with everything — including her freedom — on the line. If ever she needed a hero — or to become her own heroine — it is now!
What’s happened to Willow over the past eight years? The real question might be what hasn’t happened to the heroine, especially after looking through the gallery below, illustrating the highs and lows she’s experienced since arriving in Port Charles!
