While talking to The Wrap, Eric Kripke disclosed the official timeline for The Boys universe. According to the producer, The Boys Season 5 takes place about six months after the events of Gen V season 2. This may not seem like an important distinction, but there are characters who appear in both. Kripke is essentially just providing a timeline for key characters and plot points, since The Boys Season 5 will undeniably be affected by the 2nd season of Gen V.
In many ways, The Boys has expanded into its own television universe. Although there are only three distinct series within the franchise, they intersect and affect each other in many ways. In fact, several of The Boys’ biggest “heroes”, like Homelander, Starlight, and The Deep all make appearances in the popular spin-off show.
The Boys: Diabolical, the animated spin-off, is largely considered non-canon except for the finale. Therefore, it wouldn’t make sense to establish that show in the timeline like Eric Kripke took the time to do with Gen V. Ultimately, the writer and producer probably made the decision to state a specific timeline to cut down on fan rumors and speculation.
More often than not, a show can get bogged down by pervasive rumors and assumptions. Instead of letting fans decide whether or not Gen V will affect this season of The Boys, Kripke outright confirms it. This direct, no-nonsense approach is very similar to how James Gunn handles DC rumors. There are many instances of him correcting false claims on social media and being extremely transparent about his creative direction. If more studio leads took this approach, it could save fans from a lot of confusion that tends to generate around high-profile projects.
In the end, Eric Kripke’s confirmation on The Boys’ timeline shouldn’t come as a shock. Since there are many crossover characters, it makes sense that the new season would take place only six months after Season 2 of Gen V. Nevertheless, this decision to state the facts outright rather than letting fans speculate references an extremely positive trend among pop-culture social media usage. Hopefully, more production leads like Kevin Feige start employing this practice as well.
