Spoilers below.

HBO’s newest series Task, helmed by the Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby, has quickly become one of the network’s most exciting crime thrillers.

Starring Mark Ruffalo as ex-priest-turned-FBI agent Tom, the seven-episode series follows a task force that sets out to investigate a string of robberies that are taking place in a quaint Philadelphia suburb. But when the burglar is revealed to be the local garbage collector, Robbie (Tom Pelphrey), the situation gets even more complex.

“The tension of the story is that you care about both of these guys,” Ingelsby told The Hollywood Reporter. “You want Robbie to get away and you want Tom to get a win. But you know that can’t happen.”

For Ruffalo, the series “has a great pulse,” he told Entertainment Weekly, “It’s moving, it’s exciting. And at the same time, yes, you’re going to get your heart torn out.”

He continued, “We empathize with these people, we relate to them, and it’s totally engaging, because it’s cops and robbers. It’s the chase, danger, and crime. The wonderful world of a detective on an investigation, slowly unraveling in this collision course of these two characters that we know have to meet one day and wonder what will happen when they finally do.”

Ahead, here’s everything we know about the future of Task.

Will there be a season 2 of Task?

As of right now, HBO has not renewed Task for a second season.

But series creator Brad Ingelsby isn’t ruling out the possibility. “I’d love to have a chance to do another season of Task,” he told Esquire. “What I love about TV is just how many characters you get to explore. I really see myself as a character writer and not a great plot writer. And so what I love about TV is that you get to explore the Grassos, the Lizzies, the Aleahs. If I was to do a movie, unless I was Robert Altman, I just wouldn’t be able to tap into that many characters.”

Who would be in the cast?

Returning cast members would likely include Mark Ruffalo, Thuso Mbedu, Emilia Jones, Fabien Frankel, and Martha Plimpton.

Tom Pelphrey would not return for season 2, as his character Robbie dies from a fatal stab wound in episode 6. Alison Oliver would also not return. Her character, the state trooper Lizzie, dies after being hit by a car in the same episode.

About her character’s death, Oliver told ELLE, “I thought it was actually a really good choice because, with Lizzie’s trajectory, just before that moment, she actually reaches a breakthrough. She’s able to act instead of freezing in a high-stakes environment.”

As for who might join the cast in a potential second season, we’ll just have to wait and see.

This story will be updated.
