FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) –Valley Con welcomed stars from Broadway to blockbuster films this year, each bringing their own story of passion, persistence and purpose.
Kevin Grevioux, Rae Lim and Haviland Stillwell sat down to discuss their unique paths into acting and the characters they’ve portrayed.
Different beginnings, shared dedication
Haviland Stillwell started young in the entertainment business.
“I grew up in the business. I’ve been acting since I was nine years old — working on Broadway, then television and film. I’ve been very lucky,” Stillwell said.
Rae Lim’s acting career began later. She worked as a legal assistant until one role led her into voice acting.
“My agent put me up for a job that I thought was live action. I memorized the lines, walked into the booth, and thought, ‘Oh dear — this isn’t what I expected.’ But I booked it because I was flexible,” Lim said.
Kevin Grevioux, best known as Raze in the Underworld series, started his journey in science until a movie director changed his outlook.
“When Spike Lee came out with She’s Gotta Have It in ’86, it changed my worldview. I realized it was possible — and did a complete 180 into film,” Grevioux said.
Industry advice from experienced performers
Each actor said breaking into the entertainment industry takes more than just talent. It requires creativity, adaptability and drive.
“The way you navigate this industry is by diversifying your creative skills. If you’re an actor, learn to direct. If you direct, learn to write. Keep expanding that creative lexicon,” Grevioux said.
Stillwell emphasized the various pathways available to creative people.
“There are so many different pathways to being creative. You don’t have to live in a big city,” Stillwell said.
