Fans of Stranger Thingscharacter Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn, might not be happy about what the show’s co-creator, Matt Duffer, has to say about the upcoming fifth and final season.
In an October 2025 interview with Empire, Duffer said that viewers shouldn’t expect to see Eddie in Stranger Things Season 5, which will start airing on November 26. As fans are aware, Eddie, a Dungeons & Dragons and guitar enthusiast, was introduced during the show’s fourth season. Unfortunately, Eddie made his untimely demise while bravely helping Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and her friends.
While speaking to Empire, Duffer referenced that Quinn has been coy about whether he’s coming back for Stranger Things Season 5.
“I love that Joe Quinn is toying with people! But no, he’s dead. Joe is so busy anyway, that everyone should know he’s not coming back. He’s shot like five movies since! When the hell has he got time to come and shoot Stranger Things? No, sadly, RIP. He’s fully under that ground,” said Duffer during the interview.
Quinn gave Stranger Things fans hope about Eddie’s possible return in a July 2025 interview with Extra TV.
“There’s always a chance for anything. Isn’t there? Really, nothing’s impossible,” said Quinn in the Extra TV interview.
Joseph Quinn Shared How He Was Cast on ‘Stranger Things’
Before starring as Eddie, Quinn appeared in popular projects like Catherine the Great and Game of Thrones, per IMDb. In a July 2024 interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Quinn said he landed his Stranger Things role after sending in two self-tapes. He was then contacted by Matt Duffer and his brother and Stranger Things co-creator, Ross Duffer, who revealed he would be starring in Season 4, which premiered in 2022.
Quinn also credited the Netflix show’s casting for helping Stranger Things become so successful. The British actor said that the series has so many “talented actors” who “are able to elevate these characters into these people that people really, really love.”
