Country folk singer William Prince, who hails from Selkirk, Man., is a member of the Peguis First Nation based in Winnipeg and a two time Juno award-winning artist.
Prince released his solo debut album Earthly Days in 2015. He quickly established himself as a powerful new voice in Canadian Indigenous music with appearances at events like the Vancouver Folk Music Festival and regular solo tours.
Over subsequent records, Prince has honed in on a classic country, gospel style of songwriting, marrying powerful vocals with driving refrains to bring stories of life and the land to listeners across Canada and beyond. Prince’s fifth album, titled Further From The Country, is his most rocking record to date. Songs such as On Rolls the Wheel set the groove, while the orchestral ballad For the First Time digs into generational grief.
With songs about his father, who has contributed material to previous releases, and many tales from the hardscrabble lives of working people, Prince is becoming one of Canada’s finest musical documentarians. Bringing the lives of those who grew up in Peguis First Nation and Old West storylines to life in vivid arrangements delivered with emotional intensity is this artist’s legacy.
His live performances are acclaimed for their honesty and quality. Backed by his longtime band of producer Liam Duncan’s “Church of Better Daze” compatriots including backing vocalist Alyshia Grace (who is also Prince’s wife), bassist John Baron, drummer Cody Iwasiuk, guitarists Austin Parachoniak and Stephen Arundell, keyboardist Keiran Placatka, viola and fiddle player Ben Plotnick, violinist Trent Freeman (violin), pedal steel player Caleb Melo (pedal steel and baritone guitarist Kristopher Ulrich, the sound is big and powerful.
