Michael J Fox has labeled his Parkinson’s as a “bully.”
The 64-year-old actor, who was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease in 1991, recently reflected on the timeless appeal of Back To The Future. He discussed how the current “bully culture” makes the time travel saga still relevant today.
In an interview with Empire magazine, he said, “We live in a bully culture right now. We have bullies everywhere – you don’t need me to point the finger at who, but there are all these bullies.
“In this movie, Biff is a bully. Time is a bully. For me personally, Parkinson’s is a bully.
“And it’s all about how you stand up to them and the resolve that you take into the fight with them. It’s about your resilience and your courage.”
Since his diagnosis, the Back to the Future star has founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
The foundation has funded $2 billion in research, and at its annual gala, celebrities like Stevie Nicks showed up to lend their support. At the time, he expressed, “I can’t believe – a lot of these people I’ve known for years and years – they’re so kind to me.
“I think because they see an opportunity for a win, for a big advancement, and that’s what we’re working toward.”
