Warner Bros and New Line Cinema made headlines recently when they pushed Mortal Kombat II from its original October 24 date all the way to May 15, 2026. This was after the Red Band trailer broke records with its online views, indicating that anticipation for the R-rated sequel was astronomically high.
Now, the film’s release has been brought forward, but only by a week. Now, Mortal Kombat II is scheduled for May 8, 2026, which is Mother’s Day weekend, which will make it the ultimate counter-programming for that particular weekend, which is usually anchored by a rom-com or other kind of “chick flick.” Then again, with the presence of the handsome Karl Urban and an entire cast of bare-armed hunky martial arts dudes, maybe Mortal Kombat II has potential in that area, as well.
It’s been a long wait for Mortal Kombat II. The first film in the rebooted series came out in 2021, but failed to light the box office on fire, thanks to its Covid-era release date and Warner Bros’ controversial strategy of giving its films day-and-date releases on HBO Max. This move was criticized at the time, but it also meant that Mortal Kombat’s $84 million worldwide haul wasn’t necessarily indicative of the movie’s true popularity. See also: James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which only earned $168 million in 2021 but ultimately led to Superman’s fantastic performance of $616 million in 2025, successfully relaunching the DC Comics universe amidst claims of superhero fatigue from naysayers.
I don’t know if Mortal Kombat II has the juice to go quite that high, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it completely blows away expectations when it does launch next year. Warner Bros’ theatrical strategy in 2021 may have left money on the table at the time, but if Mortal Kombat II breaks out the way Superman did, it’ll be a long-awaited payoff in their favor… Now, in only they’ll release that friggin’ Batgirl movie, I’ll be a happy Zaky!
