Reba McEntire is recalling fond memories she shared with Brandon Blackstock following his death at age 48.
The country music icon, 70, who was married to Brandon’s father Narvel Blackstock from 1989 to 2015, told People in an interview published Tuesday, October 21, that her relationship with her late stepson was “precious.”
“I absolutely loved that child,” she said of Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband, who died August 7 following a lengthy battle with melanoma. “He came into my life, I guess he was 4 years old. Then when Narvel and I got married, he was 13, 14.”
McEntire, who is now engaged to Happy’s Place costar Rex Linn, told the publication that she “helped raise” Brandon alongside Narvel’s other children, daughters Shawna Rene Blackstock and Chassidy Celeste Blackstock, adding: “They were my kids.”

The “Fancy” singer also revealed some of the talent manager’s favorite pastimes, saying that he enjoyed pulling pranks on others.
“He loved to scare people,” McEntire said. “We’d be at the office there at Starstruck [Entertainment, a talent management company owned by Narvel] in Nashville and I’d be sitting at my desk and I’d see Penny Chubb [a Starstruck employee] walk by going to the lady’s room, and then here comes Brandon. He’d hide behind the pillar.”
She added that Brandon “is sorely missed,” telling People: “We’ll never forget him.”
As Star previously reported, Brandon had a girlfriend at the time of his death. According to his obituary, “Brandon, along with his beautiful and loving partner in life and business, Brittney Marie Jones, started building a life, building companies, and working tirelessly to create Headwaters Livestock Auction and what will live on as his legacy, The Valley View Rodeo in Bozeman, Montana.”
McEntire previously paid tribute to the talent manager via social media in August. “Last week, my stepson/oldest son Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God,” she wrote on Instagram. “His struggle is over and he is in eternal peace in God’s presence.”
