Johnny Depp, whose personal life made headlines more than his Hollywood career in recent years, is returning to the big screen.
The 62-year-old actor is set to star in the upcoming film Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, which is in the works with Paramount Pictures, according to Deadline.
The outlet reports that Ti West will direct the holiday film, based on the Charles Dickens novel, which will also star Andrea Riseborough. The script is by Nathaniel Halpern with Emma Watts producing and Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman as executive producers.
Though Ebenezer will tell the classic story of the miser Scrooge, this version will follow his “supernatural journey to face his past, present and future,” according to Deadline.
Ebenezer — set for a November 13, 2026, release — marks one of Depp’s first major projects since 2019’s Waiting for the Barbarians and 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
The actor was seen in the 2023 French-language historical drama Jeanne du Barry, but his Hollywood roles were slim amid his highly publicized defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.
The trial took place in Virginia from April 11 to June 1, 2022, and was widely covered in the media with many moments from Heard’s testimony going viral. The jury found the Aquaman actress liable in all three matters of defamation; and, in regards to her countersuit, Depp was found to have defamed her on one of three counts.
Following the verdict, Depp said that the “jury gave me my life back” and that he was “truly humbled.”
Aside from Ebenezer, Depp has a few other projects in the works, including the thriller Day Drinker, in which he stars opposite Penélope Cruz.
