It turns out the odds really were ever in the favor of this Hunger Games fan: content creator Devon Singletary has just been cast in Sunrise on the Reaping after he shared his audition tape for a nationwide casting competition.
The news, announced Friday via the official Hunger Games social media channels, revealed that Singletary is slated to play Blair, a District 12 resident and friend of Haymitch. Originally portrayed by Woody Harrelson as the jaded mentor to Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss, Haymitch is now set to be played by We Were Liars actor Joseph Zada in the upcoming prequel about a teenage Haymitch’s Hunger Games battle. Blair, a loyal friend to Haymitch, supports him when Haymitch is compelled to the arena for a battle to the death.
In the video announcement of Singletary’s casting, Zada, as well as McKenna Grace, who portrays Maysilee Donner, and Whitney Peak, who plays Lenore Dove Baird, told Singletary via video call who he would be playing in the new film.
Zada congratulated the actor who would be playing his “best friend” onscreen. “We’re so stoked to meet you,” Grace said in the video. Peak called his audition tape “actually mind-blowing.”
Singletary submitted an audition tape featuring himself speaking in a field, which he titled “Through the Eyes of a Career.” In it, he portrays a Hunger Games tribute who regards the games as a noble way to make a name for oneself. He speaks to a deceased relative, telling them, “I will be the pride of District 2. I will be the victor.”
Sunrise on the Reaping put out an open casting call for the movie in May, writing on X, “To audition, show us your best: act out a scene, perform a song, or surprise us with something completely new. All talents welcome. No previous experience necessary.” Each tape had to be less than a minute long, and only U.S. residents with a valid passport were eligible.
Sunrise on the Reaping already has a stacked cast — and since it is a prequel to the original franchise, many characters will see new actors portray their younger versions. Elle Fanning is set to star as a younger version of stylist Effie Trinket, originally portrayed by Elizabeth Banks. Kieran Culkin will portray Caesar Flickerman, while Jesse Plemons will portray Plutarch Heavensbee.
