June Lockhart has passed away of natural causes at the age of 100. She died at her home in Santa Monica, California, and her daughter June Elizabeth and granddaughter Christianna were by her side.
Lockhart was an extremely accomplished actress whose career spanned decades. She started acting when she was 8 years old, but she was best known to TV lovers as the mother in “Lassie” and “Lost in Space”. She also had key roles in several beloved films including “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “All This and Heaven Too”.
June Lockhart inspired many future astronauts with her role in “Lost in Space” and felt proud of that. NASA honored June’s impact on space exploration by awarding her the “Exceptional Public Achievement Medal.”
In a press statement, her daughter said, “Mommy always considered acting as her craft, her vocation, but her true passions were journalism, politics, science and NASA. She cherished playing her role in ‘Lost in Space’ and she was delighted to know that she inspired many future astronauts, as they would remind her on visits to NASA. That meant even more to her than the hundreds of television and movies roles she played.”
“Now, the woman who loved to fly, has embarked on her last adventure. With our hearts full of love and pride in her accomplishments, we will miss this truly remarkable woman, mom and grandmama. We reflect on her life, and we feel lucky to have been part of her journey,” her family shared as part of her obituary.
June’s onscreen families are missing her, too. Here’s what celebrities are posting to honor the TV and space legend.
