Margot Robbie’s next role is under discussion.
A source told The Sun on Monday that the Australian actress may be stepping into Christian Bale’s shoes as the serial killer Patrick Bateman in the remake of the popular horror film, American Psycho.
The film was released in 2001 and was based on a book of the same title written in 1991 by Bret Easton Ellis. The controversy surrounding Ellis’s American Psycho stems from its extreme graphic violence, including torture and sexual assault, and its portrayal of misogyny, racism and homophobia. Critics condemned the book for what they saw as its hateful content and for being a gratuitous depiction of violence, leading to boycotts and a last-minute publisher change. The story follows Bateman, a wealthy and narcissistic Wall Street investment banker in the late 1980s who leads a double life as a serial killer.

Born and raised in Queensland, Robbie began her career on the television series Neighbours from 2008 to 2011. She then moved to the United States, and led the television series Pan Am and had her breakthrough in 2013 with Martin Scorsese’s black comedy film The Wolf of Wall Street. She also achieved wider recognition with starring roles as Jane Porter in The Legend of Tarzan in 2016 and as Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe.
She also portrayed more serious roles, including figure skater Tonya Harding in the biopic, I, Tonya, Queen Elizabeth I in Mary Queen of Scots, Sharon Tate in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and a Fox News employee in Bombshell. More recently, she starred as an aspiring actress in the 2022 film Babylon and was the lead doll in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie in 2023.
The 35-year-old actress just finished promoting her newest film, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, last month.Now, she has just finished filming Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, alongside Jacob Elori and Owen Cooper, and it will be released in theaters on Valentine’s Day.

According to the source, they revealed that Robbie will be playing “a female version of Patrick Bateman” in the remake.
“Brett’s novel and the film were so controversial and the people working on the remake wanted to twist the narrative by having a female actress take on the lead of Bateman,” the source continued. “There was a huge backlash about misogyny when the novel came out back in the 90s, and by having a female killer, it puts a different spin on the crimes.”
So far, the movie is still in its very early stages of production and “finer details are still being ironed out, but everyone that is involved in the process so far have said they are so excited to get it announced and start work.”
Neither Robbie nor any production company has filed an official statement.
