A Bruce Springsteen fan pointed out a minor, if hilarious, inaccuracy in the musician’s biopic, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere. Now out in cinemas, the movie stars The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White as Springsteen, and was directed by Scott Cooper.
Early in the story, the film introduces a composite character, Faye (played by Odessa Young), as Bruce’s love interest. In one scene, while picking up Faye for their first date on New Year’s Eve, the singer meets her daughter Haley, who informs him she’s just had a hot dog.
When he asks what sauce she had it with, the kid triumphantly says “mustard,” to which Springsteen smiles and says it’s his favourite too.
While sweet, the scene is factually inaccurate, as a superfan pointed out on Twitter/X. In real life, Springsteen has actually been quite vocal about his dislike of mustard.
“In Deliver Me from Nowhere, Bruce Springsteen says his favorite hotdog condiment is mustard but in real life, Bruce Springsteen HATES mustard so much he did a whole yap about it during a show,” the fan wrote, including an explanatory clip of The Boss criticising the tangy condiment.

On stage, Springsteen is relaying a story about his favourite sandwich — “ham, with cheese and lettuce, and a lot of mayonnaise, but no mustard”.
“I don’t like any mustard. I don’t like it on my hot dog, I don’t like it on my sandwiches, no,” he said.
The post had other Springsteen fans join in the debate, with one person writing: “Thank you! I gasped when I heard that.”
There seems to be no ambiguity as to whether Springsteen despises mustard, though some suggested that the biopic’s Bruce could’ve played it nice as he was talking to Faye’s child.

“This is an amazing pull, but I would probably tell the kid that what they had was my favorite too,” a third person wrote.
“Agreed, I do think they probably overlooked it, but one could argue he just said so to be nice to a little girl,” was another comment.
Others think the moment could’ve been included in the film as an Easter egg for fans of Springsteen who would’ve clocked the line immediately.

“Spoiler alert – he was getting to know a child’s favourite thing. I’m beginning to think that line was deliberately put in there for us fans to laugh about because of what we know. It’s the sort of trivia we all love,” a fourth fan wrote.
“This is honestly so specific that I feel like it’s gotta be on purpose,” a fifth person noted.
Given that Springsteen was directly involved in the making of the movie, this theory doesn’t seem too far-fetched. Until official confirmation, the mustard-gate is still on.
