Richard Gere has unleashed a scathing critique of Donald Trump, labeling the former president among several “bad guy leaders” he believes are plunging the world into turmoil.
During a pointed interview with Channel 4’s Krishnan Guru-Murthy, the Pretty Woman star declared: “The entire planet has fallen off a cliff into the stupid zone.”
He went on: “The bad guys exploit the illusion of differences.
“Do we really think these refugees are different than us? Do you really believe what these clowns like Trump, Orban, Netanyahu, Putin, what these guys say?
“Or do you look at your heart and go: the world isn’t like that? If we can remove the stupid stuff that most of these bad guy leaders are dumping on us, and go back to who we really are: profound kindness.”
“Six months, he’s almost destroyed our country,” he stated.
Earlier this year, while accepting a lifetime achievement award at Spain’s Goya Awards, Gere again blasted the American leader, calling him a “bully and a thug”.
He told the audience: “I’m coming from a place now that we’re in a very dark place in America, where we have a bully and a thug who is the president of the United States.”
The actor warned that authoritarianism was spreading “everywhere,” adding: “We have to be vigilant. We have to be alert. We have to be energetic. We have to be brave. We have to be courageous.
“And everyone who’s watching this – in the Spanish-speaking world and elsewhere – we have to be willing to stand up, tell the truth, be honest. And there’s a place in all of our lives for basic kindness, for basic love and understanding.”
Gere, who relocated to Madrid in 2024 with his wife Alejandra Silva, has been a longstanding advocate for humanitarian and spiritual causes.
A passionate defender of refugees, he previously described Trump’s refugee policy as his “biggest crime,” stating it “conflated the meaning of refugees and terrorists.”
He also criticized those in Trump’s inner circle, adding: “The millionaire clowns surrounding Trump are immature and narcissistic, a deadly mix.”
