Gayle King might have been a mainstay of CBS Mornings for well over a decade, but it’s widely believed the 70-year-old TV icon is wrapping up her tenure on the beloved network news program.
According to Variety, four people close to the situation confirmed that King is likely to depart from CBS Mornings at an as-of-yet unspecified point next year.
With her contract set to expire in May, King may shift roles at the network as part of new changes brought upon by Paramount Skydance. If past examples are any indication, King could even receive her own program at CBS, or move to another pre-existing program like CBS Evening News.
When reached out to for comment by Variety, CBS News responded by saying, “There have been no discussions with Gayle about her contract that runs through May 2026. She’s a truly valued part of CBS and we look forward to engaging with her about the future.”
Meanwhile, an attorney for King (Lawrence Shire of Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks) did not provide a response when asked to comment on the issue.
While talks between King and CBS are ongoing, the announcement comes at a time during significant shifts within CBS’s hierarchy. Over the past several months, Paramount has instituted an array of changes for the longtime TV network, including the dismissal of dozens of CBS News workers.
As part of the new changes in store for CBS News, CBS Evening News has decided to replace long-standing news anchor John Dickerson. Additionally, the network severed ties with CBS Saturday Morning co-anchors Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson, along with executive producer, Brian Applegate.
Ahead of Paramount’s sale to Skydance Media, CBS also announced the cancellation of its late-night series The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, causing significant controversy for the network and its owners.
