From the beginning of their romance, Halloween has consistently maintained a meaningful significance for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Within months of beginning their courtship in 2016, the royal pair marked the frightening festivities alongside Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, and her now-husband Jack Brooksbank.

The quartet ventured out in Toronto, Canada, where they attended the city’s Soho House for an Apocalypse-themed celebration, as exclusive behind-the-scenes images featured in the Sussexes’ Netflix documentary series disclosed their distinctive costumes from that evening, including Harry’s Mad Max-inspired getup, which was loaned from the movie’s star, Tom Hardy, and Eugenie’s coordinated look.

At that point, Harry and Meghan were still dividing their time between London and Toronto – where Meghan continued her acting career on the series Suits – while maintaining their romance away from public scrutiny.

Although the pair sought privacy just four months into their courtship, they were also exploring a few public appearances together, as royal biographers Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand documented in their book, Finding Freedom.

They penned, “They especially didn’t feel like spending Halloween weekend in hiding, as there was much to celebrate. Some four months into their relationship, they were madly in love and eager to take part in the fun of one of their favorite holidays.

“The evening of October 29, with Harry in town, the couple decided to go to a big costume party being thrown at Soho House in Toronto.”

Only a few hours into their Halloween bash, they learned that a newspaper had gotten wind of their relationship and planned to break the news in the next day’s edition, reports the Mirror.

The authors penned, “A cocktail or so into the party, they were both feeling relaxed, absorbing the Halloween spirit.

“It was possibly the perfect night out – until they received a call from one of Harry’s aides at Kensington Palace. It wasn’t good news.”

Harry also recounted the incident in his memoir Spare, noting that “everything was rendered moot” the day following the party when their relationship became public knowledge.

He elaborated, “Well, we said, staring anxiously at our phones, it was going to happen eventually.

“In fact, we’d had a heads-up that it was likely to happen that day.

“We’d been tipped, before heading off to the Halloween Apocalypse, that another apocalypse might be coming. More proof that the universe had a wicked sense of humor.”

Despite the memories from their first Halloween together, the October holiday still holds a special place for the couple, particularly now that they’ve welcomed their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Earlier this week, Meghan posted a charming video of Harry and their kids picking pumpkins from a pumpkin patch and carving them with various designs in preparation for the spooky season.

The kids are captured gleefully sprinting through rows of massive pumpkins, with Harry trailing behind, wielding a carving knife. Later, he is seen drafting his ideal design as his two children look on.
