ST. LOUIS – “Soul On Fire,” a big-screen movie based on a St. Louis man’s survival and recovery after a childhood explosion, has now been in theaters three weeks. New box office numbers show the movie has made a strong impression nationwide so far.
“Soul On Fire,” a production of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s AFFIRM Films, is based on the true story of John O’Leary, who survived a massive explosion in his family’s home at just nine years old and overcame extensive medical treatment and personal challenges before he became a highly-respected motivational speaker.
According to IMDb, an online database for movie productions, the film was produced with an estimated budget of $3 million.

In its opening weekend, from Oct. 10 to Oct. 12, the movie earned $2.83 million in gross domestic sales across 1,720 theaters in the United States. As of Nov. 1, now with three full weeks in theaters, domestic gross sales have reached $7.02 million, according IMDb extension BoxOfficeMojo.com.
Industry sources, including Variety.com, suggest the general rule of thumb is that a film needs to gross at least 2.5 times its production budget to turn a profit.
With more than $7 million in domestic sales and an estimated $3 million budget, “Soul on Fire” has nearly reached that benchmark, a promising start for a movie with a seven-figure budget, likely with multiple more weeks in most U.S. theaters.
While marketing costs, advertising and theater cuts will factor into the film’s net revenue, it appears “Soul on Fire” is performing well relative to its production budget.
“Soul On Fire” was also the first major movie production primarily shot in the St. Louis region to benefit from Missouri tax incentives program that launched in 2023. For a closer look at St. Louis-area landmarks featured in the film and acting cast, click here.
