The Young and the Restless has brought back one of its most infamous characters, Matt Clark, now played by veteran soap actor Roger Howarth. Fans initially believed Howarth would play Mitch Bacall, Sienna Bacall’s husband. But the October 31 episode revealed a shocking twist: Mitch is actually Matt Clark, the notorious villain from Nick and Sharon’s past.

Speaking to Soap Opera Digest, Roger Howarth said he felt honored when Executive Producer Josh Griffith approached him for the role. “I trust Josh completely.” he shared. “Matt Clark is an awesome character.”
Howarth credited the show’s costume designer, Mandi Line, for helping him fully immerse himself in the role. “She thought of it all, man. She made me feel like it was going to be easy to slip into the character,” he explained.
Howarth said he took the time to understand the character’s dark past with the help of the writers, who explained the character’s history. He added that Matt has been pretending to live as Mitch for so long that he’s almost started to believe it himself.
The actor hinted that fans won’t have to wait long to see Matt’s darker side. “I’m really thankful that I get to play a character with mischief and devious and villainous qualities,” he admitted. Howarth described him as “this is a true bad guy.”
He added that Matt faked his own death years ago just to get revenge, which shows the kind of person he is, and it has only made him more ruthless. He revealed that Matt will continue pretending to be Mitch for as long as possible. “He’s been telling the same lie for so long that he thinks it’s the truth, and I think that’s a beautifully human and broken thing to investigate through story.”
Howarth also expressed his gratitude to fans for their warm response to his casting. “I’m really touched by the support. The whole point of doing what we do is so an audience enjoys it. Thanks for watching, tune in and I hope you enjoy it. It should be fun.”
