Will Patty Jenkins Return For The Third ‘Wonder Woman’ Movie? Director Responds

When DCEU began its journey, it was all dark and gloomy, trying to find something that would not only set them apart but also resonate with audiences on a deeper emotional level. That moment arrived with Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman — a film that broke through the franchise’s grim tone and infused it with hope and heroism. The first film, released in 2017, turned out to be a massive hit, and it didn’t take much time for Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel.

Unfortunately, the sequel underperformed at the box office, and since then, there have been minimal talks about the third Wonder Woman film. Although there have been no updates regarding who will helm the next Wonder Woman project in the newly revamped DC Universe, fans want to see Patty Jenkins have another go at the character that defined the franchise. But is she ready to step back into that world again? Well, as she herself put it, “never say never.”

Warner Bros. Pictures

While speaking to the Marvel Cinematic Universe News at an event, the 54-year-old filmmaker opened up about whether fans would ever see her directing another Wonder Woman movie and complete the trilogy. Even though she didn’t dodge the query, Jenkins didn’t express any kind of commitment to the title, either.

She said, “You know what? You never say never, because I love Wonder Woman. But, at the moment, I’m so excited with what I’m doing and moving on. It’s always good to do something new. I loved making superhero movies… You never know, but I’m having a good time.”

It would be exciting to see if Gunn will consult Jenkins whenever he decides to introduce the character in the DCU. In 2017, she picked DCEU up from the trenches and made everyone believe what good storytelling can do. After the success of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013, the DCEU found itself in a difficult position when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad received negative reviews from the critics.

The franchise needed to bounce back with something strong, and then came Wonder Woman. The film went on to receive universal acclaim and made everyone believe that DCEU had good stories to tell. On the other hand, it earned more than $822 million globally during its theatrical run, making it a roaring success. However, the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), couldn’t replicate the success of the original film because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Since then, fans have been asking the production giant to complete the planned trilogy and give a satisfying conclusion to the character’s arc. However, with DCEU no longer in motion, the chances of that happening seem uncertain. Let’s see how and when Gunn introduces the character in the ongoing DC Universe and if Jenkins makes a return to the franchise she helped build.
