Benedict Cumberbatch’s new film The Roses is set to make its streaming debut on Hulu this November. Directed by Jay Roach, the dark comedy, which features Olivia Colman, is based on Warren Adler’s 1981 novel, titled, The War of the Roses. The film follows a perfect couple in California whose marriage unravels under the strain of jealousy and insecurities. Following its release, the film earned for its powerful performances and storytelling.

The Roses will release on Hulu in November 2025

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman’s The Roses is set to make its streaming debut on Hulu on November 20, 2025, following its theatrical release earlier this year (via Variety).

Set in California, The Roses follows Ivy and Theo, a seemingly perfect couple with thriving careers and a close-knit family. However, when Theo’s professional standing begins to collapse while Ivy’s career thrive, their relationship deteriorates. Their marriage starts to collapse under jealousy and resentment.

Cumberbatch and Colman leads the cast as Theo and Ivy. The other cast members include Hala Finley, Andy Samberg, and Wells Rappaport. The film premiered in the United States and the United Kingdom on August 29, 2025, and went on to earn approximately $51.7 million worldwide, with a domestic gross of $15.2 million (via Box Office Mojo).

Critical response has been generally positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 65 percent approval rating from 187 reviews, with particular praise for the lead performances. TIME’s Stephanie Zacharek described the film as both “funny and piercing.” She added, “We know these two are right for each other, for the long haul; why can’t they see it? But their problems are also so universal that watching them struggle is weirdly comforting.”

Zacharek concluded with, “That’s true of the Roses, for better or worse. They’ve taken the lines “Til death do us part” seriously. Not even a messy divorce could tear them asunder.”
