Indiana University Auditorium is bringing together a classic American movie and its IU Symphony Orchestra for two one-of-a kind showings of the 1939 “The Wizard of Oz.”
The Jacobs Live at the Movies event will have the film on the big screen accompanied by a live performance of the musical score by the orchestra, under the direction of conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos. In addition to two performances of the film and live music, there will be pre-show talks both days.
A special screening of “The Wizard of Oz” will be presented at the IU Auditorium on Nov. 7 and 8, 2025.
What the performance includes
“The Wizard of Oz” will be screened in its entirety with the IU Symphony Orchestra performing the score live, with the music and cinematic action synchronizing in real time.
The Indiana University Symphony Orchestra practices the score of “The Wizard of Oz,” which it will perform live during screenings of the 1935 movie on Nov. 7 and 8, 2025, at the IU Auditorium.
When are the performances?
The Jacobs Live at the Movies event will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, and 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.
When are the pre-show talks and who is speaking?
Larry Groupe, an award-winning composer and composition professor at the IU Jacobs School of Music, will offer insights into the score for “The Wizard of Oz.” Groupe will be talking alongside musicologist Kirby Hagland. Together they’ll explore the timeless music and cinematic artistry of “The Wizard of Oz.” There will be behind-the-scenes insights into how the musical score brings this movie classic to life.
This is free and open to the public with both talks in Fine Arts Room 015. The talks are 6:30-7:15 p.m. Nov. 7 and 1-1:45 p.m. Nov. 8.
