A fourth film in “The Mummy” series is being planned and the two original stars are returning.
Variety reports Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, who starred together in the original film released in 1999 and the sequel in 2001, will reunite for the newest movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sean Daniel, who was one of the producers of the original movies, will work on the upcoming film. Radio Silence will direct.
The original movie was a major hit, grossing nearly $423 million worldwide. The film was tongue-in-cheek, going more for thrilling adventure than horror.
The first sequel, “The Mummy Returns,” also did well, grossing $443 million.
The third film, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” was released in 2008 and starred Fraser but not Weisz. It was not embraced like the previous films but still grossed more than $400 million.
The new movie would disregard the events in the third film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
An updated version of “The Mummy” in 2017 and starring Tom Cruise did not do well in the U.S. and Canada. Fraser said in 2022 he believed Cruise’s film was too dark, Variety reports.
“It is hard to make that movie,” Fraser said. “The ingredient that we had going for our ‘Mummy,’ which I didn’t see in the new one, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. ‘The Mummy’ should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”
