The Mummy franchise is officially back from the dead — and this time, the original stars may be returning to the tomb.
When Was It Confirmed?
Rumors of a new Mummy movie began circulating after Deadline reported that Universal Pictures is developing The Mummy 4 as a direct continuation of the original trilogy, not a reboot. The film is reportedly moving forward with a fresh creative team, and while Universal hasn’t issued an official statement, the buzz intensified when screenwriter David Coggeshall (The Family Plan, The Deliverance) shared the article on X (formerly Twitter) with the cheeky caption: “Cat’s out of the bag, I guess :).”
Are Brendan and Rachel Really Returning?
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, who played adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan, are said to be in early talks to reprise their iconic roles. The duo last appeared together in 2001’s The Mummy Returns. Weisz exited the franchise before the third film, which saw Maria Bello step into the role.
Fraser, now fresh off his Oscar win for The Whale, has long expressed interest in revisiting his character. “I don’t know how it would work,” he told Variety in 2022. “But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit.”
As for Weisz, her return remains a mystery — particularly since Evelyn was reportedly killed off in The Mummy Returns. But with the series’ supernatural roots, fans are already imagining how she could make a comeback.
What Will It Be About?
The upcoming film will be directed by Radio Silence — the filmmaking team behind Ready or Not and the recent Scream movies. Longtime Mummy producer Sean Daniel will return, joined by William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein under the Project X Entertainment banner.
Unlike the 2017 Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise, this installment will reportedly ignore the events of 2008’s Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and instead continue the story of the original O’Connell family.
When Does It Come Out?
Universal hasn’t announced a release date yet, but with the project officially in development and its creative team set, production could kick off as soon as 2025.
