Sunmi has released a cheeky, albeit creepy at times, music video for ‘Cynical’ – check it out below.
True to its title, the video sees Sunmi poking fun at several horror tropes, including dressing up as a ghost and sitting atop a police officer’s shoulders – a nod to the iconic Thai horror film Shutter – and dancing in empty carnival grounds in the dead of night, all while dancing and having fun.
She also references the now legendary ‘hide and clap’ scene from the first Conjuring film in the video, alongside other blink-and-miss-it nods to horror franchises, including The Ring.

‘Cynical’ is taken off her solo debut album ‘Heart Maid’, released via ABYSS COMPANY yesterday (November 5). The album consists of 13 tracks – all of which she wrote the lyrics for, including the aforementioned ‘Cynical’.
The other tracks on the album are titled ‘Maid’, ‘Sweet Nightmare’, ‘DDU DDU’, ‘Mini Skirt’, ‘Tuberose’, ‘Bass(ad)’, ‘BLUE!’, ‘Balloon In Love’, ‘Happy af’, ‘Walking At 2AM’, ‘Bath’ and ‘A Long Long Night’.

She first released the track ‘Balloon In Love’ in June 2024, serving as the first preview of the ‘Heart Maid’ album. That song marked Sunmi’s first new music release in eight months, following her October 2023 digital single ‘Stranger’. Prior to that, she had dropped the single ‘Heart Burn’, which was named one of NME’s 25 Best K-pop Songs for 2022.
Before signing with Abyss Company in 2017, Sunmi was signed to JYP Entertainment as a soloist, and a member of girl group Wonder Girls prior. Over her solo career, the singer has released several hits, including ‘Gashina’, ‘Noir’ and ‘You Can’t Sit With Us’.
