Meghan Markle said she was “done” with acting three years before she was spotted on a film set this week.
The Duchess of Sussex, 44, is rumored to be returning to her former profession, joining stars like Brie Larson, Lily Collins, Brit Henry and Jack Quaid, for the production of Close Personal Friends.
The mom-of-two was reportedly filming on location in Pasadena, California, on Wednesday, November 5.
According to The Sun, Meghan is playing herself in the Amazon MGM Studios production about two couples, one famous and the other not.
A studio source told the publication, “This is a massive moment for Meghan and signifies a return to doing what she truly loves.
“She has been swamped with offers but this one felt right. It is Meghan’s way of gently putting her toe back in the water and seeing how she enjoys being back on set.
“Everyone involved is super-excited, and have been sworn to secrecy about her involvement.”
The Sun reported that Meghan’s husband, Prince Harry, is “really supportive and quite simply wants Meghan to do whatever brings her joy.”
Another insider told People that Meghan has “a small part” in the production, adding that she “seemed very relaxed and happy” on set.
The source said the Duchess “introduced herself to everyone and was very sweet and down-to-earth.”
The role will be Meghan’s first return to acting since she married Harry in May 2018. In November 2017, during the couple’s first joint TV interview with the BBC after their engagement, Meghan announced that she was retiring from acting and would no longer appear in Suits.
Her final appearance was in the Season 7 finale, which Meghan filmed in 2017. “I don’t see it as giving anything up, I just see it as a change,” Meghan told BBC’s Mishal Husain, adding, “It’s a new chapter. Right.
“And also, keep in mind, I’ve been working on my show for seven years. So we’re very, very fortunate to be able to have that sort of longevity on a series.
“For me, once we hit the 100-episode marker, I thought, you know what? I have ticked this box, and I feel really proud of the work I’ve done there, and now it’s time to, as you said, work as a team with [Harry].
“I think what’s been really exciting as we talk about the transition out of my career and into my role is the causes that are really important to me that I can focus even more energy on.”
After stepping back from their senior royal roles in 2020, the Sussexes moved to Montecito, California, where they are now raising their children, six-year-old Prince Archie and four-year-old Princess Lilibet.
In an interview with Variety in 2022 for their Power of Women issue, Meghan was asked if she would consider acting again.
She replied, “I’m done. I guess never say never, but my intention is to absolutely no.”
However, shortly after, the Sussexes announced their Netflix documentary series, Harry & Meghan, and she then went on to create her own lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan.
In June, Meghan, who portrayed attorney Rachel Zane in Suits, admitted that she “sometimes” misses acting on Emma’s Grede’s Aspire podcast. She also shared with the entrepreneur how her Netflix show, while not scripted, is giving her a piece of that back, which was “really great.”
