Two powerhouse acts from different genres are uniting for a collaboration that’s as unexpected as it is nostalgic.
Grammy Award-winning country group Shenandoah has collaborated with Canadian rock band Nickelback to release a new rendition of Shenandoah’s 1989 hit “The Church on Cumberland Road.” The reimagined track, out now, blends the storytelling warmth of the group’s country twang with Nickelback’s signature rock edge.
The partnership was born out of a series of shared festival performances earlier this year. “First, let me say that it’s always a great opportunity to befriend those in the music industry, regardless of the genre,” said Shenandoah frontman Marty Raybon, per Blabbermouth. “Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and I had the chance to talk about their music and ours and the parallels of some of the tunes that could be swapped out on the setlists. The idea came up, and after a few text messages, we were off and running with what is one of the coolest things we’ve ever done. Shenandoah and Nickelback. Who would have thunk it.”
Per the outlet, Kroeger agreed, calling the experience “an absolute blast.” “Getting the chance to collaborate with them on ‘The Church on Cumberland Road’ was an absolute blast. It’s a song that feels as vibrant today as it did when it first came out.”
An accompanying animated video, created by Cartuna, pays homage to Shenandoah’s original 1989 visual while featuring Kroeger alongside the band. The country band has had many other chart-topping partnerships with stars like Luke Combs, Jason Aldean, and Luke Bryan — to name a few.
In fact, earlier this week on November 3 Aldean reunited to perform the group’s ‘80s hit “Sunday in the South.” The pair, who originally recorded their rendition with the band in 2024, treated fans to a live version that quickly went viral. Bryan shared a clip of the performance on Instagram, writing, “The go to cover that @jasonaldean and I got to redo with @shenandoahband. Loved getting to play ‘Sunday in the South’ with Jason.”
