Roger Howarth has officially joined the cast of The Young and the Restless as back-from-the-dead Matt Clark. The fan-favorite actor recently opened up about what he enjoys most about playing the complex new role.
In a video shared on the official The Young and the Restless Instagram account, Howarth spoke about his new character. “I love a character that has a secret and he is not who he says he is,” he shared. On-screen, Matt has returned to the show under the assumed identity of Mitch Bacall.
Continuing in the Instagram video, Howarth, added, “There’s a complexity to it, there’s a self-centered arrogance to him, that is just so fun and there’s kind of no limit to the kind of destruction somebody like him is capable of.”
The Daytime Emmy winning actor, known for his memorable roles on One Life to Live, As the World Turns and General Hospital, went on to share, “This is a nice experience for me. I feel really lucky.”
Fans took to the comment section on the Instagram post to share their excitement for Howarth’s arrival, one user wrote, “Roger Howarth is perfect for this because he can take what under a different performer could be a very one note role and draw out the complexities of the character”
While a second fan shared their fears with the storyline being short-term, writing, “My only issue with this storyline is this feels like the character is temporary, for November sweeps. Roger is much too good of an actor to be temporary. I would love to have him be a long-term contract character.”
Meanwhile, a third viewer excitedly added, “It’s so fun seeing Roger Howarth playing bad guys because he’s so very good at it and we get to see the why behind the things they do and makes them the most interesting characters. Hopefully he’ll be around for a long time.”
The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS and streams weeknights on Paramount+.
