The rapper who gave us “Fancy” — a track that ruled the summer of 2014, spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and scored her four Grammy nominations — has officially entered her next act.
On Wednesday, November 5, the 35-year-old Aussie artist was announced as the Creative Director and strategic partner for Thrust, “a new platform built on Solana” that wants to clean up the “bad reputation” surrounding celebrity coins. And according to the official press release, Azalea is in good company. She joins internet personality N3on — fresh off a new album rollout with Hit-Boy — and Megan Fox. The Transformers icon’s debut marks a bigger Hollywood entry into Web3, signaling how entertainment and tech are continuing to collide.
“Today is the day. @IGGYAZALEA is our Creative Director. Culture coins are inevitable,” posted Jake Antifaev, co-founder of Thrust, on X (formerly Twitter). “From the beginning, we connected with Iggy on the idea of building a platform for the celebrities and creatives to create tokens the right way.”
Fans wasted no time reacting. “Massive energy watching the rollout,” one person wrote. “Iggy the legend,” added another. “Yes mother is ready to GOOOO!!!” chimed in a third.
This new chapter comes nearly two years after Azalea’s surprise exit from music. In January 2024, she took to social media with a lengthy note announcing she was shelving her next album and shifting her focus to design and creative direction. “I’ve always been someone who finds my joy in being creative & seeing my ideas come to life,” she wrote, adding that she wasn’t “bullied away” from music but simply ready for something new. “In truth what I’ve known for a long time is that I feel more passionately about design and creative direction than I do about songwriting.”
Wrapping up her post, the “Black Widow” hitmaker said: “Cant wait to start sharing some of the things I’ve been involved in creating & hoping you’ll see my quirk & humor in anything I touch!”
Coins and music aside, Azalea has been busy being mom to son Onyx. Born in 2020, the songwriter confirmed his arrival on Instagram. “I kept waiting for the right time to say something, but it feels like the more time passes, the more I realize I’m always going to feel anxious to share news that giant with the world,” she wrote at the time. “I want to keep his life private but wanted to make it clear he is not a secret & I love him beyond words.”
Azalea shares Onyx with rapper Playboi Carti, whom she dated from 2018 to 2020 before the two called it quits later that year. Their split wasn’t exactly subtle — Azalea later said she left Carti “right after I had my son,” explaining on High Low with EmRata that she wanted to protect Onyx from the kind of volatile relationship she grew up around.
These days, she’s made it clear she’s raising her son solo. During a 2024 appearance on Dinner’s On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, she said, “I’m very much the only parent… I am not co-parenting really, and that’s just the reality of it.”
