The Princess of Wales appeared sombre in a monochrome ensemble as she paid her respects to fallen soldiers during today’s Remembrance Sunday service.

The future Queen looked deep in thought on the centre balcony at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, while King Charles led the nation in a two-minute silence at 11am during the National Service of Remembrance.

Wearing all-black, Kate honoured those who courageously died fighting for their country by wearing a single red poppy, which she fastened to her Catherine Walker London ‘Evie’ coat.

The royal also paid a touching tribute to Princess Diana by wearing her Collingwood earrings, inherited from her late mother-in-law.

The statement piece – which was made by the Spencer family jeweller – was a gift to Diana on her wedding day to Charles in 1981 and she wore them throughout her life to parties and state banquets.

Kate also wore them for last year’s Festival of Remembrance, paying homage to Prince William‘s mother.

Today, she also honoured her grandfather, Peter Middleton, by opting to wear a gold winged RAF brooch, which she carefully placed next to her poppy.

Peter – who passed away aged 90 in 2010 – served as a fighter pilot during the Second World War and had his own connection to the Royal Family after flying from South America to London Heathrow with Prince Philip on board in October 1966.

The royal appeared solemn and bleary-eyed as she reflected on every soldier who gave up their lives fighting for the country.

Kate, who was standing alongside Queen Camilla, wore a respectful high-collared jacket for the occasion, with a black lace scarf which she matched with a £1,295 black large Belvedere percher from Lock Hatters.

She travelled to the Cenotaph by car alongside her husband, Prince William, as she waved at crowds of well-wishers.

Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, followed behind shortly afterwards.

Charles wore a field marshal uniform with a ceremonial frock coat, then stepped forward and laid a wreath at the Cenotaph before saluting again.

Prince William, wearing his RAF uniform in the rank of Wing Commander with a greatcoat, poppy and sword, followed shortly after the King, similarly laying a wreath and saluting.

Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, also appeared teary-eyed as she watched the service from the left balcony alongside the Duke of Kent, 90, who gave a firm salute as the service began. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester watched on from the right balcony.

Prime Ministers past and present, including David Cameron, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, also paid their respects as they lined up together in front of the Cenotaph. Party leaders Sir Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch stood in front of them holding wreaths.

Services have taken place across the country to honour the fallen, with this year’s Armistice Day marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two.

Some 10,000 armed forces veterans took part in the Royal British Legion’s march-past through Whitehall, alongside about 20 Second World War veterans.

Senior politicians and members of the Royal Family departed after laying wreaths so the thousands of veterans could start their march-past.

Ahead of the two-minute silence at 11am, military bands performed songs including Rule Britannia as crowds watched on along Whitehall.

This comes as Kate attended the Festival of Remembrance on Saturday evening with her son, Prince George, 12.

For the annual event, the Princess of Wales wore a stunning black dress with a wide white collar from Alessandra Rich and earrings that once belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The mother-of-three’s dress was adorned with an HMS Glasgow brooch and a handmade poppy created out of silk, glass and other natural materials by Izzy Ager, of Lock and Co, who has recently graduated from the Royal School of Needlework.

George put on a brave face as he walked into the historic Royal Albert Hall in Kensington with his mother by his side. The future King looked dapper in a black suit complete with a poppy pin and a striped tie.

Charles also appeared visibly moved by a heartfelt rendition of God Save the King at the festival.

The monarch, who was announced as a patron of the Royal British Legion last year, was then treated to three cheers from the Armed Forces at the Royal Albert Hall.

It was also a memorable night for Prince George, who made his debut at the Festival of Remembrance alongside his mother, the Princess of Wales. George was effectively standing in for his father, Prince William, who was travelling back from his Earthshot Prize Awards and the COP30 summit in Brazil.

Sir Rod Stewart, Sam Ryder and Keala Settle also attended last night’s event, where there were performances by the Central Band of the RAF, the RAF Squadronaires and the Band of HM Royal Marines.

Ahead of today’s commemorations, the Prime Minister said: ‘This Remembrance Sunday, we pause as a nation to honour all those who have served our country.

‘We reflect on the extraordinary courage of our armed forces in the world wars and subsequent conflicts, whose service secured the freedoms we cherish today.

‘Eighty years since the end of the Second World War, we remember a generation who stood against tyranny and shaped our future. Their legacy is peace and our duty is to protect it.

‘Such sacrifice deserves more than silence, which is why this Government remains committed to supporting veterans, their families and those who serve.

‘Today, we remember, and we renew our promise to uphold the values they fought for.’
