According to an exclusive report by Rob Shuter, some Saturday Night Live cast members were “furious” with Pete Davidson’s return to the show this week.
“[Davidson] acted like he was doing everyone a favor,” one insider claimed. “He’s still the same loud, cocky guy — but now he’s bitter,” they added. Another insider alleged that the SNL alum “ignored old friends, bragged nonstop, and made people uncomfortable.”
Furthermore, producers of the show, as per the report, are ‘worried’ about Davidson aiming for a “full-time return” to the sketch comedy show after his unsuccessful venture into the movies. A longtime member of the show’s staff allegedly said that Davidson “needs SNL more than they need him.” The source further claimed, “But no one’s rolling out a welcome mat.”
Davidson returned to the show this weekend, joining Colin Jost and Michael Che at the Weekend Update desk. The star joked about a myriad of topics, including the decommissioned Staten Island ferry boat he purchased with Jost. “We even gave the boat a new name. You know, we thought ‘The Staten Island Ferry’ sounded too depressing. So now it’s called the Titanic II,” Davidson joked.
Despite the laughs on camera, the SNL alum’s return left a sour taste among some cast members, the report said. One insider stated, “The Titanic II isn’t the only thing sinking — Pete’s ego might be next.”
Shortly after his surprise appearance on SNL this weekend, Pete Davidson spoke to PEOPLE about his return to the show. “I had a great time hosting last time, and anytime you get that call, it’s an honor and a privilege,” he said. “It’s always relevant, it’s a hot show. People look forward to it, and the cast is great,” Davidson added.
The comedian also gushed about SNL creator Lorne Michaels, saying, “I owe that guy my life. He jump-started everything. So I’d do anything for Lorne, and he knows that.”
