The latest film on this list, Warfare, is about a platoon of American Navy SEALS on a surveillance mission gone wrong in insurgent territory.

It is directed by Alex Garland and former Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza. Warfare is based on the memory of a real mission Mendoza experienced. However, because of this, the movie’s narrative doesn’t feel like a traditional movie, but rather an intense event happening in real time.
The star-studded cast includes Will Poulter (We’re The Millers, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Death of a Unicorn), Cosmo Jarvis (Shogun), Kit Conner (Rocketman, Ready Player One, The Wild Robot, and The Wild Robot), Noah Centineo (Black Adam and Dream Scenario) and D’Pharoah Woon-A-Tai (Caught Stealing, Reservation Dogs, and Hell of a Summer).
Warfare averages a 3.5 out of 5 on Letterboxd and 7.2 out of 10 on IMDB and is praised for its performances and gritty realism. It has a 92% from critics and 93% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes as well.
It is available to stream on HBO Max and Hulu.
Hacksaw Ridge
Based on the true story of American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge tells the story of Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II despite being a Conscientious Objector.
Even though Doss refused to take a life, he saved many despite being told he didn’t need to serve his country due to his beliefs.
Andrew Garfield was the lead actor, showing he has a lot of range outside of portraying Spider-Man. Hacksaw Ridge also stars Sam Worthington, Vince Vaughn, Teresa Palmer and Hugo Weaving.
Hacksaw Ridge averages a 4 out of 5 on Letterboxd and an 8.1 out of 10 on IMDB. The average critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 84% while the audience rating is 92%.
It is available to stream on Netflix.
Black Hawk Down
Black Hawk Down is an action-packed war movie about U.S. Rangers and an elite Delta Force team that dropped into Mogadishu in 1993, trying to capture two high-ranking warlords, when they are attacked by a large force of Somalis.
Similar to many of the movies on this list, Black Hawk Down isn’t an easy watch, as there are many casualties depicted in this film.
The movie stars Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor, Tom Sizemore, Jason Isaacs, Orlando Bloom, and Tom Hardy.
Black Hawk Down averages a 3.7 out of 5 on Letterboxd and a 7.7 out of 10 on IMDB. The average rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes is 77% while the audience average is 88%.
It is available to stream for free (with ads) on Tubi and can be rented on Amazon Prime Video.
Saving Private Ryan
This Oscar-winning war movie tells the story of U.S. troops crossing enemy lines to bring a young soldier home during World War II.
Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film stars Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Paul Giamatti, Matt Damon and more.
Saving Private Ryan has a human element to it that many military movies don’t. The camaraderie is unlike any other, thanks to its strong cast and well-written dialogue. The action is also intense, with an opening that is considered to be one of the best depictions of any military battle.
It averages a 4.2 out of 5 on Letterboxd and an 8.6 out of 10 on IMDB. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 94% critic rating and 95% audience rating.

Full Metal Jacket
Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket is one of the quintessential films in the genre.
The movie follows a pragmatic U.S. Marine who observes the dehumanizing effects the U.S.-Vietnam War has on his fellow recruits from their boot camp training to actual combat.
Full Metal Jacket has a surprising amount of humor thanks to the late veteran and actor R. Lee Ermey, who portrayed a brutally accurate drill instructor.
It stars Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent D’Onofrio and more.
