Apple Martin, daughter of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, 48, and Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow, made a wobbly singing debut in a surprise appearance with the band Jade Street in Nashville in late October. The response was harsh. “She sounds a hot mess,” wrote one commenter on a clip of the performance, while another opined, “A voice only a mother could love.”

Indeed, despite the Vanderbilt University senior’s brutal reception, a source tells Star Gwyneth, 53, is in fact pushing the the 21-year-old to ignore the critics and keep following her dream.
“She’s telling Apple not to let this derail her,” the source says. “She understands it’s hard to block out the haters, but as far as she’s concerned, the only way to handle this is to get back on stage as soon as possible.” (On Oct. 28, Jade Street released a decidedly more tuneful version of the song, “Satellites,” apparently from the same gig, that garnered more positive comments on YouTube.)

While Apple is “sensitive,” the source says Gwyneth is determined to see her become a star. “She’s telling her she needs to get a thicker skin,” says the source, adding, “She knows her daughter and says she knows what’s best for her.”
