Prince Edward will visit Ghana for an official visit just months after reports Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were eyeing the West African nation for another faux royal tour.
The Duke of Edinburgh is set to touch down in Accra on November 23rd for the visit, which will mark the prince’s first visit to Ghana since 2018.
The port city on the gulf of Guinea was a favourite destination of Edward’s mother Queen Elizabeth II.
Ghana has been a republic since 1960 but remains a member of the “commonwealth of nations” and maintains warm relations with the United Kingdom.
The nation was also reportedly on the Sussexes’ wish list for a possible “official visit” after their much-publicised tours of Colombia and Nigeria.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex set off on a whirlwind 72-hour tour of Nigeria in May 2024 during which the couple promoted the Invictus Games and met with top leaders.
Harry and Meghan’s visit also attracted controversy after it emerged they were photographed meeting a wanted international criminal.
As non-working royals, all international trips conducted by the Sussexes are in a private capacity without the guidance of the palace or the British Home Office.
King Charles was reportedly furious about the visit and is worried the Sussexes are attempting to destablise the Commonwealth and set up a rival royal court.
“The ultimate fear for King Charles and William is that Meghan’s rebelliousness actually ends up making her more appealing than the understated members of official team royal,” a source told the Mirror newspaper.
In February, fresh reports emerged that Ghanian leaders were going to “pull out all the stops” to convince the Sussexes to fly to Accra after the publicity surrounding the Nigeria visit.
“Ghana has extended an invite for this year,” an insider told The Mail on Sunday.
“There is certainly excitement and anticipation for a visit.
“Whenever they are ready, the red carpet will be rolled out for them. A selection of incredible villas with top security would be set aside for them.”
Instead, it appears the Ghanaian government has invited an actual working royal to tour their nation.
