Fans have taken online to share theories that Hilary Duff’s new single ‘Mature’ takes a swipe at Leonardo DiCaprio and his reputation for dating women younger than him.
Arriving last week, the single marked Duff’s first new music in 10 years, and is a witty track that sees her look back at her formative years and make sly jabs at a man was known for having age-gap relationships.
Fans have been quick to assume that the person in question may be 51-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio – who has dated multiple women much younger than him over the years, and inspired jokes on social media that he ends the relationship once they turn 25.
In the tongue-in-cheek lyrics across ‘Mature’, one line that stood out to fans was “Just a few years younger, a new haircut / Very Leo of you with your Scorpio touch”, with some assuming that the reference of “Leo” may actually be a nod to the actor, and “Scorpio” being his star sign.
Other presumed references include a mention of “Carbon Beach” in Malibu, where the Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood star owned a home between 1998 and 2021, as well as a reference to a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting.
“Bet she’s so impressed by your Basquiat / And she thinks you’re deep in the ways you’re not,” Duff sings in ‘Mature’. Some online have suggested that this could be a nod to how the Titanic actor was given a Basquiat artwork called Red Man One from Malaysian financier Jho Low in 2014, and surrendered it three years later due to Low being wanted by authorities for alleged corruption (via Artnet).
“OK so wait, is Leonardo DiCaprio the #hilaryduff fling she is singing about! She would fit his type, lived at Carbon Beach, Malibu, saying its a Scorpio which Leonardo is. Could so see him talking about Basquiat, having her park elsewhere hmmmm,” wrote one fan on X/Twitter, convinced the song could be about The Revenant star.

Another wrote: “Wowowowow. Hilary Duff LITERALLY wrote #Mature about her previous secret relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio,” also highlighting that Duff may have referenced him again in a 2007 song called ‘Danger’.
In that track, she sang: “Were you born in ‘74? Are you the kind of guy that I should ignore?”, and the actor also happened to be born in 1974.
Someone else on X was convinced the song could be about the actor, tweeting: “Did not have ‘Hilary Duff dropping a Leonardo DiCaprio diss track’ on my 2025 bingo card but here we are & it feels great.” Find more fan responses below.

Despite rumours circulating online, there is no confirmation that the two were ever in a relationship, and Duff previously explained that the song was meant to be “a little conversation that my present self is having with my younger self.”
“The two of us are reflecting on a past experience and sending love to each other. It’s a chuckle, a wink, and a sense of being grateful that we are sure footed in where we landed,” she said.
To celebrate her first new music since 2015, Duff will be heading out on the ‘Small Rooms, Big Nerves’ tour in the new year. Shows kick off at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on January 19, and continue in Toronto, New York City, and Los Angeles later that month.

As for DiCaprio, the actor recently starred alongside Benicio del Toro in the critically acclaimed drama One Battle After Another, and spoke to NME in September about his “incredible” experience of seeing Oasis live and his love for Radiohead.
He is also reportedly being considered for a sequel to 1995 classic Heat, and set to work with Martin Scorsese in What Happens At Night alongside Jennifer Lawrence.
