At last, Alien fans can take a breath. Alien: Earth isn’t going anywhere, with a second season confirmed for FX and Hulu. But another season might not be the only thing cooking up in deep space.
On November 11, FX formally announced that television creator Noah Hawley has signed a new overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television. Hawley’s continuing partnership with Disney includes a new season of Alien: Earth, according to the press release, with a targeted shooting date set for “next year” in London. A premiere date was not revealed.
Said FX Chairman John Landgraf in a statement: “It has been our great privilege to work with Noah for more than a decade on some of FX’s best and biggest shows, and we are thrilled to extend our partnership well into the future… Noah never stops surprising us with truly original stories—and his unique ability to bring them to vibrant life as a director and producer as well as writer makes him extraordinary. We can’t wait to get to work on the next season of Alien: Earth, as well as some equally exciting future projects in advanced development.”
While Alien: Earth is moving forward with a second season, Hawley’s new deal suggests there’s room for even more season renewals in store. That is assuming the show maintains—or better yet, grows—its viewership when the second season hits streaming. The phrasing of Landgraf’s statement also hints that Hawley is brewing more new shows for FX and Hulu. Whether they are original ideas or more adaptations of existing films and IP, which has been the case for a lot of Hawley’s success at FX thus far, is uncertain.
The press release also withheld any information about the story set for season 2. In the season 1 finale, the Lost Boys successfully pulled off their “coup” of Prodigy and fended off invasion from Weyland-Yutani. The show ended with virtually all of the surviving adult humans (and one Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh) locked in a cell. The Lost Boys also enjoy the benefit of not one, but two Xenomorphs at their command. But a smiling Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin) makes you wonder who actually has the upper hand.
With shooting set to commence in London in 2026, it will be awhile before fans can reunite with the Lost Boys. Factoring editing, mixing, and VFX, we’re probably looking at a 2027 premiere date at the earliest. But if it’s more Alien you crave, consider checking out Predator: Badlands in theaters now. Through Elle Fanning’s character Thia, the latest Predator movie has an unexpectedly strong cross-over continuity with the Alien universe.
