Dave Mustaine has revealed how long Megadeth‘s farewell tour will last for.

The legendary metal band announced their plans to retire earlier this year with a farewell album and tour. “There’s so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional,” Mustaine explained in a social media post. “Most of them don’t get to go out on their own terms on top, and that’s where I’m at in my life right now.”

So far, Megadeth have shared lead single ‘Tipping Point’ from their final album – and now, frontman Dave Mustaine has revealed how long they plan to tour for.

In a new interview with Kerrang!, 64-year-old Mustaine estimated that the band’s final tour would last “for another three to five years”. He added: “If we’re going to be doing it for that long then, shit, I’ll be looking at the birthday I don’t even want to think about!”

Further explaining his decision to play a farewell tour, Mustaine reasoned: “I’m not caught up in longevity and stuff like that, and being one of those guys who can play until he’s in his 80s. I have to remember that people live and they die. And I need to take good care of myself.”

The band’s farewell tour dates are yet to be announced.

Mustaine has previously revealed that the band will be covering Metallica classic ‘Ride The Lightning’ for their final album, explaining: “One of the songs is a cover song but I actually wrote it, so it’s kind of like a cover, kind of like my song.”

The frontman was briefly the lead guitarist in Metallica. Though he was kicked out of the group in 1983 before the release of their debut album ‘Kill ‘Em All’, he is credited with writing a few songs on their first two records, including ‘Ride The Lightning.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Mustaine said that “it wasn’t really that I wanted to do my version. I think that we all wanted it to turn out a certain way, and for me, this was about something so much more than how a song turns out. It was about respect.”

Elsewhere, Megadeth have explained why they were conspicuously absent from Black Sabbath’s recent ‘Back To The Beginning’ farewell concert.
