While it’s hard to picture King Charles kicking a rusty tin can, his decision regarding Harry and Meghan retaining their Royal titles has been delayed for far too long. Even after the harsh Megxit of 2020 and their departure from our welcoming arms to the sun-soaked palm trees of Montecito, California, the idea of the newlyweds losing their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles seemed hasty to many.
However, just as Queen Elizabeth’s death in 2022 shook the world, so too has the British Royal landscape dramatically changed over the past three years. The Windsors’ saga can be a dizzying and wild roller coaster ride for us all to follow. How can such privilege, structure, and tradition so often erupt in scandal, petulant rebellion, reckless dalliances with sycophants, questionable business figures, potential spies, and ultra-wealthy pedophiles?
Andrew and Fergie alone could populate a Cluedo board with the nightmare characters they’ve welcomed into Buckingham Palace and their social circle over the years.
If James Bond villain Goldfinger were real, Andrew would likely be his friend – he’s wealthy, flaunts his riches, is slightly unstable, and enjoys golf, reports the Express. Auric Goldfinger may not have owned a tropical island retreat, but if he did, that would check another box for Andrew.
Over the decades, our Royal Family has cycled through fairytale weddings, estrangements/divorces, minor scandals, shocking TV interviews, and then onto new fairytale weddings again. If you’re a Royal Family enthusiast like me, it seems like the ‘facepalm’ moments are always just around the corner. It’s a never-ending cycle of drama.
Even famed authors like Agatha Christie or Jilly Cooper couldn’t have written some of the dramatic events we’ve witnessed coming out of Windsor in recent years. As King Charles has delicately navigated the delicate dynamics between his sons, two things have become apparent.
Firstly, Prince William is the solid foundation upon which our future monarchy must be built. Secondly, I see striking parallels between Prince William and the Duchess of Kent on one side, and Andrew and Harry on the other.

Consider the remarkable life of selfless service led by the late Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley, the Duchess of Kent, both in her Royal duties and, even more impressively, her humble role as a simple music teacher named ‘Kath’. She was the first Royal to convert to Catholicism since 1685, demonstrating her independent thinking, and recognizing her dual passions for music and children, she quietly stepped back from Royal life to become a music teacher at a primary school in Hull.
She even relinquished the use of her Royal title. In the staff room, she was simply “Kath”, and to the students, she was “Mrs Kent”. She likely brought her own packed lunch.
This sense of accessible public service is what William and Kate are aiming for with the modern Royal family.
Then there’s Andrew and Harry on the other side. Both seem to feel that Buckingham Palace owes them either a lavish lifestyle, invites to every high-profile VIP party, or a perpetual apology. William’s influence is already evident in the ousting of the now Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
The question remains, how long before King Charles concedes that a similar fate must befall Harry and Meghan, allowing William to shape the institution into one he can lead? Harry and Meghan have often hinted at a permanent departure to Santa Barbara. For everyone’s sake, let’s hope it happens sooner rather than later.
