The critically-acclaimed comedy “English Teacher” has been canceled after two seasons.
Brian Jordan Alvarez created and starred in the series, playing Evan Marquez, a passionate high school teacher with a dry sense of humor. His costars included Stephanie Koenig (Gwen Sanders), Enrico Colantoni (Grant Moretti), Sean Patton (Markie Hillridge), and Jordan Firstman (Malcolm).
Season 1 of “English Teacher,” which premiered on FX in September 2024, received rave reviews. The Hollywood Reporter praised the show’s “sharp ensemble, smart perspective, and finely honed sense of humor,” while The New York Times said Alvarez’s performance “strikes just the right note of curdled exasperation.”
Season 2, which hit FX on Hulu in September 2025, has a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. FX has not commented on the cancelation decision.
Despite its success, “English Teacher” has been marked by controversy from the start. Shortly before the release of season 1, actor Jon Ebeling accused Alvarez of sexual assault.
“My personal experience with the Cre*tor of this show was much closer to the plot of B*by Reind**r than whatever this is,” Ebeling wrote via his Instagam Story at the time, referring to Richard Gadd’s Netflix series about being raped by a successful television writer.
Ebeling claimed that Alvarez, a former friend of his, sexually assaulted him while filming the 2016 webseries “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo.” He filed a police report with the LAPD one day before “English Teacher” premiered, eight years after the alleged assault occurred. Ebeling further discussed the allegations in a December 2024 Vulture article.

Alvarez denied the claims via a spokesperson, who said in a statement that the actor’s’ “interactions with Jon Ebeling were always entirely consensual — as numerous witnesses have attested.”
Two months after the Vulture article was published, FX renewed “English Teacher” for season 2.
“We reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the show’s launch. Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time,” a spokesperson for FX said at the time.

Ebeling told the Daily Beast in February that he was “heartbroken and devastated” by the show’s renewal.
“I’m in fear for the people who have to work with Brian and continue to work with Brian,” Ebeling added.
