Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan are sharing the key to a lasting marriage — and it’s as simple as laughter.
While attending the A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s gala in New York City on Saturday, November 15, Pollan, 65, told PEOPLE the heartwarming advice she and her husband gave their eldest son, Sam Fox, before he tied the knot with his longtime love, Molly Milstein.
“The one thing actually that I would say that’s the most important thing is find something to laugh about together every day, if you can,” Pollan said. “You know what, we just take it one day at a time and it’s worked.”
It’s clear the actress speaks from experience. Pollan and Fox, 64, have been married for 37 years, raising four children — Sam, 36, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, 30, and Esmé, 24.

The couple first met on the set of Family Ties in 1985 and married three years later. Fox has often credited Pollan as his anchor through life’s toughest challenges, including his Parkinson’s diagnosis, which he’s had since 1991. “One of the things I’ll always love Tracy for is that at that moment [of my diagnosis], she didn’t blink,” he said during a 2020 appearance on Today. “She’s there in the front lines with me every single day.”
Fox also reflected on his relationship with Pollan while promoting his memoir Future Boy. “She’s my best friend, my partner,” the Back to the Future star told PEOPLE back in October. “Tracy’s the first person I check in with and the last person I check in with.”
While appearing on The View that same month, the Doc Hollywood actor reflected on the journey surrounding his early diagnosis, admitting it initially sent him into a battle with self doubt. “I got diagnosed, I went into a serious tailspin and really had a hard time. My family, I kind of wasn’t there for them and I was drinking a lot and just bad,” he revealed. Still, he refused to let it define him, and ended up telling the public about his diagnosis seven years later.
Since then, he’s been leading The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has since raised more than $2.5 billion for Parkinson’s research.
