Trey Anastasio Band hit the stage in Denver, CO on Friday and Saturday to kick off a 12-show 2025 fall tour. The two sold-out shows featured a total of three new originals (“Real You” and “Mindless Mood” on 11/14 and “Simeon” on 11/15) and saw a pair of classic Phish compositions (“Stash” and “The Lizards”) return to the live TAB rotation after long absences.
In addition to Trey Anastasio (guitar, vocals), whose last tour was a solo acoustic trek earlier this year, and Russ Lawton (drums), Dezron Douglas (bass), and Ray Paczkowski (keys), who in 2024 toured with Trey as Classic TAB, the band features longtime members Cyro Baptista (percussion), Natalie Cressman (trombone, vocals), and Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet, vocals) as well as new tenor saxophonist/vocalist Kenneth Whalum, whose C.V. is a long, genre-crossing list of notable artists. Whalum arrived in Denver for TAB tour on the heels of an eventful month during which he did everything from performing with Sabrina Carpenter on Saturday Night Live and to honoring Sly Stone, OutKast, and more with all-star ensembles at the recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
On Friday night, Trey Anastasio Band got the tour started on a high note with the first TAB take on Phish stalwart “Stash” in nearly two decades (last played 12/30/06). Late in the set, following a searing “Blaze On”, Anastasio and company debuted the first new song of the run, the shuffling, motivational “Real You”. An explosive, set-closing rendition of reliable jam vehicle “What’s Going Through Your Mind” was accompanied by spirals of light and color courtesy of Mission Ballroom’s high-tech, LED disco ball.
Friday’s second set opened with the intertwining horns of “Shine” before coming down on a jazzy “Wolfman’s Brother” improv session and a quick-footed “Last Tube”. The second debut of the night, “Mindless Mood”, played a foil to its fellow newbie, leaning on a sparse funk groove, call-and-response backing harmonies, reserved but impactful blues-rock riffs from the man in charge.

Riding the momentum of the well-received new tune, the band dug into a strong, set-closing run featuring “The Moma Dance”, “Love Is What We Are”, “Sand”, “Valentine”, and “No Men In No Man’s Land”. Anastasio returned for his curtain call without the band in tow, and after serenading Denver with a solo acoustic take on his sentimental, pandemic-era “Lost in the Pack”, he was joined once again by his seven cohorts for an emphatic “Everything’s Right” encore.
On Saturday, Trey Anastasio Band resumed the Mission Ballroom stage with a towering “First Tube” and delivered a well-balanced opening set of Phish tunes, TAB staples, and songs that reside somewhere in the middle of that Venn diagram. Set two heated up quickly and never cooled as extrapolated takes on “Gotta Jibboo”, “Set Your Soul Free”, “Back on the Train”, “Steam”, and “Life Saving Gun” arrived in succession. A detour through the ethereal on “Liquid Time” found its way back to reality with spirited runs through “Twist” and “Tuesday”, “A Life Beyond the Dream” carried its requisite emotional weight, and “Ghost” reached a howling climax to round out the frame.
After returning for the encore with one last debut, the subtle “Simeon”, featuring Anastasio on acoustic guitar, Trey and company sent the Mission Ballroom into hysterics with the first-ever TAB rendition of seminal Phish favorite “The Lizards” in front of a live audience. (TAB did play “The Lizards” once prior, during the livestream-only Beacon Jams in 2020). Finally, the band topped off the late-show embarrassment of riches with a quick and dirty “Carini”.
