Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie The Odyssey has created huge excitement, and many fans are wondering which version of the ancient poem they should read before the movie arrives. Nolan himself has now shared the translation that influenced him most while preparing the movie.

Christopher Nolan names one of the translations he has read before making The Odyssey

Speaking in an interview with Empire Magazine, Christopher Nolan said fans will have to wait until summer 2026 to see whether Odysseus finally makes it home and what awaits him there. Until then, readers can revisit Homer’s classic story to understand the hero behind the myth.

He said, “I think it’s the Emily Wilson translation that begins, ‘Tell me about a complicated man.’ He added, “The genius of the character, the cleverness, the inventiveness of him, that was a huge part of what interested me. He’s not just a soldier. He’s an amazing strategist, a very wily person.”

Nolan’s adaptation focuses on the classic theme at the heart of Homer’s poem, a man trying to get home. This movie brings him directly to the original ancient story, following Odysseus’ ten-year struggle to return to Ithaca after the war.

The movie is described as a mythic action epic, which will follow Odysseus’ long, dangerous journey home after the Trojan War. Matt Damon leads the film as Odysseus, supported by a star-studded cast including Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, and more.

Newly released photos reveal Anne Hathaway as Penelope, queen of Ithaca, and Tom Holland as Telemachus, the son of Odysseus and Penelope. Frankenstein star Mia Goth also appears, playing Melantho, one of Penelope’s maids. The highly anticipated movie is slated to arrive in theaters on July 17, 2026. It will be produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas.
