One of the most prolific actors of his generation is being recognized for a lifetime of excellence on the silver screen.
Tom Cruise received a Academy Honorary Award on Sunday at the 2025 Governor Awards. Renowned director Alejandro G. Innaritu presented Cruise with the award, and the two are set to work on a yet-to-be titled film together.
As he accepted the award, Cruise discussed the path that movies have taken him on while acknowledging those who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the films we know and love.
“The cinema, it takes me around the world,” Cruise said. “It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways.”
Cruise said that films make people from different backgrounds and walks of life laugh, feel and hope with one another, giving people the chance to see life from different, varied perspectives.
“That is why it matters, that is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am,” the actor added.
Cruise’s Inspiration and a Path Forward
The 63-year-old “Mission: Impossible” star spoke on what drew him to the cinema as a fan, and eventually as a performer.
“I was just a little kid in a darkened theater, and I remember that beam of light just cut across the room, and I remember looking up, and it seemed to be just exploded on the screen. Suddenly, the world was so much larger than the one that I knew,” Cruise noted.
“Entire cultures and lives and landscapes all unfolded in front of me, and it sparked something. It sparked a hunger for adventure, a hunger for knowledge, a hunger to understand humanity, to create characters, to tell a story, to see the world.”
Cruise said that the possibilities of filmmaking were and continue to be limitless, giving actors and directors the chance to tell new stories in interesting and captivating ways for audiences around the planet.
Cruise Receives Praise from the Academy
When Cruise was announced as a recipient, Academy President Janet Yang praised the actor. Yang said that Cruise is “one of the most recognized and highest-grossing actors of all time,” and that his “incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all.”
Cruise famously performs dangerous and death-defying stunts in his films, with the massive set pieces in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise as a favorite for fans.
As Cruise’s career continues, it’s clear that he’s well respected by audiences and critics around the world, as well as by his fellow peers in the film industry.
