EXCLUSIVE: Beta Film and German film school Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg (FABW) are joining forces on a “lab to market” AI initiative that they hope will help shape the future of film and TV production. The alliance pairs one of Europe’s most prominent producer-distributor groups with one of the continent’s most renowned film schools.

The film and TV world is grappling with how to implement AI tools and systems, and there is also widespread concern about their implications on jobs. Against that backdrop, Beta and FABW said they will develop new ways of using AI in film and TV production. The goal, the organizations said, is to work on Europe-based and ethically responsible R&D and training in AI and virtual production.

More from Deadline

“With this partnership, we are bringing the industry directly into our innovation laboratories in a field that is highly relevant for the future,” said Dr. Andreas Bareiss, Director, FABW. “Our students don’t just learn theory – they are actively shaping the future of content production together with one of the most influential European players.”

For Beta Film, which is a fixture at the traditional film and TV festivals and markets, this is the second big AI announcement in as many weeks. It comes soon after we broke the news that it was launching AI start-up Chapter41. The Berlin-based production and training outfit is run by Hannes Jakobsen, Dominik Böhm, and Lars Stark.

Speaking about its AI project with FABW, Jan Wünschmann, Producer, Beta Film, added: “In addition to supporting new talent, we will develop technologies and formats that will help shape the film and television landscape of the future. This collaboration is a great lab-to-market opportunity and an important part of our group-wide AI strategy.”
