A powerful new thriller about fentanyl trafficking made its Boston-area debut at a VIP screening at Patriot Place, according to a community announcement.

The film, “King Ivory”, stars Ben Foster, James Badge Dale, Michael Mando, Melissa Leo and George Carroll, also known as rapper Slaine. It explores the deadly opioid epidemic and the fight against cartels flooding communities with fentanyl. The movie earned the Ambassador of Hope award at the Venice Film Festival.

The event at Showcase Cinemas de Lux was the only local screening before the film was scheduled to open on 1,400 screens nationwide Nov. 14. Proceeds from the premiere benefit the Greg Hill Foundation. Greg Hill, host of WEEI 93.7 FM’s morning show, led a Q&A with Slaine and producer Jeremy Rosen following the screening, according to the announcement.

Slaine plays a Tulsa drug cop determined to dismantle a cartel operation. The Boston-born artist is active in recovery efforts and co-founded charlesriverrecovery.com, a treatment center in Weston, and Grand Rising Behavioral Health, an outpatient mental health facility in Norwood.

“We are so proud to share this film with a Boston audience as it shines a light on the harsh realities of the fentanyl crisis plaguing our communities,” Carroll said. “It’s an honor to be part of such an incredible cast and to work with Jeremy Rosen and John Swab on such an important film.”
