Timothée Chalamet said Adam Sandler should’ve won an Oscar for his performance in the 2002 film, Punch-Drunk Love
“It is one of the most important performances,” the Marty Supreme star told Sandler during a joint appearance in Los Angeles
The pair first met on the set of 2014’s Men, Women & Children, though Chalamet’s scenes were ultimately cut from the film
Timothée Chalamet is proving he’s one of Adam Sandler’s biggest fans.
During a joint appearance at the Nov. 15 Sandler x Chalamet event held at Los Angeles’ Fairfax High School, the 29-year-old actor insisted that Sandler’s performance in the 2002 film Punch-Drunk Love was enough to deem him worthy of an Oscar.
“It is one of the most important performances,” Chalamet told Sandler, 59, onstage at the event, per Variety. “It’s impactful, deeply moving. As a young actor knowing you for your comedic work, seeing that thrown against the context of your other work, I’m like, ‘Wow, this is a f—— incredible actor. I hope I can give a performance like this.’ ”
Beyond his work in Punch-Drunk Love, Sandler has starred in comedy classics, including Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer. He first rose to fame as a Saturday Night Live writer and cast member from 1990 to 1995. Recently, he has been promoting his new Netflix comedy, Jay Kelly, alongside costars George Clooney and Laura Dern.
“I know it’s not about awards, blah, blah, blah, but you should have a golden man in your hand,” Chalamet continued of the actor. “Man, you’re one of the best f—— actors of all time.”
For his part, Sandler acknowledged Chalamet’s recent successes, including his Oscar-nominated depiction of Bob Dylan in last year’s A Complete Unknown and his more recent work in A24’s upcoming film, Marty Supreme.

“What you continue to do for cinema and for all of us is beyond it all,” he told Chalamet. “I just cannot wait to see what you bring in the future.”
Sandler went on to recall that he first met Chalamet back in 2014 when he had been cast in Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children — though Chalamet’s scenes ended up being cut from the final version of the film.

“I remember when Jason Reitman was talking about you being in it,” Sandler noted. “He said to me, ‘Oh, I got this kid playing the quarterback. He’s coming. He’s incredible.’ He, like, knew.”
Since crossing paths all those years ago, Chalamet and Sandler have kept in touch with an occasional friendly game of basketball. In July 2023, the pair was spotted engaged in a tense outdoor basketball game in New York City.
Then, in January, Sandler made a surprise appearance to support Chalamet ahead of his first musical performance on Saturday Night Live. While introducing him to the audience, the Sandler pronounced Chalamet’s name in his usual comedic way, nodding to a joke made by Nikki Glaser at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards weeks prior.
“Your name sounds like something Adam Sandler would say,” Glaser, 41, quipped during the award show, prompting the Happy Gilmore star to reply from the audience with his own spin on the pronunciation.
