The Princess of Wales skipped a key event with King Charles, Queen Camilla and Prince William on Tuesday evening, but there may be a very good reason behind her absence. The royals hosted a glittering white tie diplomatic reception at Windsor Castle for members of the Diplomatic Corps.
It is the first time the diplomatic reception has been hosted in Windsor for 24 years, with Buckingham Palace saying the last occasion was in 2001. Princess Catherine last attended the annual gathering in 2023, just months before her cancer diagnosis.
Both Charles and William wore a traditional Windsor Coat with its distinctive red collar and cuffs.
Charles also opted for traditional knee breeches and buckled shoes, while William wore classic trousers instead.
Camilla was dressed in a cream embroidered dress by Fiona Clare, her diamond serpent necklace and diamond Van Cleef and Arpels earrings. She also wore Princess Eugenie’s wedding tiara, the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara.
The reception celebrates the presence in London of one of the largest Diplomatic Corps in the world. Hundreds of representatives of countries accredited to the Court of St James were welcomed to the castle dressed in their finery for the showcase of the UK’s diplomatic year. The evening usually includes a buffet supper and dancing.
Foreign ambassadors and high commissioners based in the UK, their spouses or partners, and diplomatic staff were among those invited.
However, while fans may have been hoping to see the future Queen at the major event, there may be a reason she likely opted to skip it.
Earlier in the day, Catherine, who announced she was in remission in January, delivered her first major public speech in two years.
She called on business leaders to prioritise “time and tenderness just as much as productivity and success” at a summit hosted by her Royal Foundation Business Taskforce for Early Childhood.
The royal, who would have undoubtedly loved to attend the glittering reception, may have chosen to rest and prepare for tonight’s glitzy event in London.
The Prince and Princess of Wales will attend the Royal Variety Performance for the first time since Catherine’s recovery from cancer.
William and Catherine will watch as the cast of Paddington The Musical takes to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday night, along with pop star Jessie J and Grammy award-winning singer Laufey.
The evening of entertainment will also feature English band Madness and actor and Celebrity Traitors star Sir Stephen Fry.
It will be the sixth time the royal couple have attended the annual charity event, and the first time since the princess’s recovery from cancer.
