Meghan Markle was humorously criticized by fans after they noted the Duchess’s preference for formal address, even in less formal settings, during her most recent interview. The Duchess of Sussex is featured on the cover of US magazine Harper’s Bazaar for its December 2025/January 2026 issue.
The magazine published a comprehensive interview with Meghan, who is currently promoting theholiday edition of her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, set to premiere on December 3.
In the interview, Kaitlyn Greenidge, the magazine’s writer, describes meeting the Duchess for the interview, stating: “We’re in a grand brownstone on the Upper East Side that belongs to one of Meghan’s friends. It comes after Meghan’s shocking real role in Harry’s estrangement from his family was exposed.
“When I enter, the house manager announces, ‘Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,’ even though we appear to be the only other two people in the house.” Royal enthusiasts quickly picked up on how Meghan was addressed and took to social media to share their thoughts.
One user questioned on X: “WAIT – this is a direct quote from the interview?”. Another responded: “I bet that happens everywhere, just like her use of HRH.”
A third chimed in: “M is deluded if she has her doorman calling out her title. Her royal title is worth nothing to her now, and she won’t have it much longer, so why be all desperate over using it?”.
A fourth queried: “Didn’t she say in the Oprah interview that titles meant nothing to her?”.
One observer noted: “She really wants people to use that title to associate it with her and thinks the BRF wouldn’t be able to take it from her then. She doesn’t get that it doesn’t belong to her and they can take it if they want, doesn’t matter if she styles herself with it or not.”
Another chimed in: “Not surprised at her pretentiousness…but I am surprised it’s taken others this long to notice.” During the interview, the duchess expressed her appreciation for being able to spend more time with her children due to working from home.
She also opened up about her relationship with Harry, her partner of nine years, stating “he loves me so boldly, fully, and he also has a different perspective because he sees media that I wouldn’t”.
Despite stepping back from Royal duties in 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex still hold their Royal titles but have agreed not to use them for commercial purposes following discussions with the Royal family.
