The director of the upcoming Resident Evil reboot, Zach Cregger, gave an update on the film. He shared how he plans to build the movie straight from the games themselves — a direction that has fans curious about what a game-faithful adaptation could look like. Cregger, known for Barbarian and this year’s Weapons, gave a sneak peek at his approach.

What did Zach Cregger say about Resident Evil reboot?

Zach Cregger made an admission in Deadline’s Crew Call podcast interview when asked whether watching the older Resident Evil movies got him thinking about what he would change. “I have never seen a Resident Evil movie,” he said. He clarified that while he skipped the films, he has “played the games religiously” and feels “intimately familiar with Resident Evil as a game franchise.”

Cregger explained that he finds the games “inherently cinematic,” praising their structure and pacing. “There’s something about the structure of those games and the pacing of those games that it’s so thrilling to me, and I have never seen a movie that really leans into what those games offer,” he said. Because of that, he couldn’t compare his upcoming film to what the previous movies “do or don’t do well,” but emphasized what excites him: bringing the games’ tone to the screen.

He added that he loves “the slow creeping dread that these games naturally kinda of exist in,” and wants to experiment with the connection between video game mechanics and storytelling. “The idea of being able to make a video game structure in a narrative film or reverse back, make a narrative film with the video game structure… I can’t believe that it hasn’t happened yet,” the filmmaker stated.

Calling the franchise “so huge, so globally well respected,” Cregger said it feels like “an honor” to take it on. “I am feeling very excited about this,” he concluded on the Resident Evil update.

Notably, the Resident Evil franchise began in the ’90s as a PlayStation game before expanding to other platforms. The first live-action film arrived in 2002, featuring Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez. Jovovich remained the face of the series for a total of six films, ending with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in 2017.
